Hon. Seyi JAKANDE, the Executive Chairman Odi-Olowo/Ojuwoye LCDA, has declared the proliferation of small arms and light weapons a critical and insidious threat to community security, stating that the real danger lies in the "unperceivable" nature of the perpetrators.
The Chairman's stark assessment came on Tuesday, 18th November, during a high-level familiarization and courtesy call by a delegation from the South-West Zonal Office of the National Centre for the Control of Small Arms and Light Weapons (NCCSALW) at his office. “The threat from small arms is as potent as that from heavy weaponry, if not more, because the bearers are often hidden in plain sight,” Hon. Jakande told the visiting team, led by CP Abiodun Alamutu (Rtd.), the Zonal Director. “This makes intelligence gathering and collaboration not just important, but essential for our survival.”
The visit, which Hon. Jakande described as a "welcome and exciting development," marks a significant step in bridging national security strategy with grassroots governance. He revealed that his administration's very first major assignment was the creation of a successful joint security task force, underscoring that the "protection of life and property" is the core mandate of his office.
“We are thrilled by this visit and have involved our own security personnel from day one to ensure immediate synergy with your team,” he assured the NCCSALW officials, expressing strong confidence in their capabilities.
The NCCSALW delegation, which included seasoned security experts like Commander Way Olabisi (Rtd.), ACP Akinniyi Ibrahim, Major O.P. Dasi (Rtd.), Mr Okikiola Ogungbe and Mr Mayole Ojeleye were present to formally introduce the Centre’s mission and seek collaboration.
CP Alamutu explained that the NCCSALW was established on May 3, 2021, by a Presidential Executive Order and now operates under a full Act of Parliament. Operating from the Office of the National Security Adviser, its primary mandate is to prevent and control the proliferation of small arms and light weapons across Nigeria, in line with international protocols from the AU, UN, and ECOWAS.
He noted that the Centre’s staff are drawn from a pool of experienced personnel from the Nigerian Army, Air Force, Navy, Police, DSS, and other security agencies, ensuring a robust, multi-agency approach to the complex challenge.
The meeting concluded with a firm commitment from both sides to work hand-in-hand, signaling a new, coordinated front in the fight to disarm criminal elements and secure local communities, starting from the grassroots level
